DeLand has the oldest and best tree canopy in the county. Most of what we do here is keeping those trees standing rather than taking them down.
The oaks through DeLand's historic district and around the Stetson campus are the kind of trees you do not replace in a lifetime. Some of them predate the houses they shade. Work on a tree like that should be conservative, and anyone who quotes you a hard cutback on one is telling you something about how they work.
DeLand is inland, so the salt problems drop away and the soil holds differently than it does on the coast. What you get instead is age. Older trees mean more deadwood, more cavities and more decisions about whether a limb can stay.
Big old oaks carry deadwood and hollow sections that are not automatically fatal. Knowing which cavity is structural and which is cosmetic is the whole job.
